EMPTY SPACE

Empty Space is my senior capstone film at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I had a lot on my plate during the time that I was working on this project, I was the motion graphics tutor at SCAD, and the MOMELove Club co-president, which meant I was in charge of running the largest student-run motion graphics conference in the world, CoMotion, alongside my good friend, Peter Wang.

Empty Space, and it’s theme, mirrored my experience working on the project. This project serves as a reminder to clear your head from time to time. I spent many nights working on this project, fixing problems, finding new problems and constantly rendering, but no matter what I would stress out about, I knew that if I cleared my mind and focused, I could get everything done.

I created a series of fully functional rigs using a combination of inverse kinematics and Cinema 4D’s XPresso.

Here you can see the rig for the bird that I made and the rig I created for a book to open.

FUN WITH MATERIALS

I wanted all of my materials in this project to have a clay-like glaze to everything, so I created a shader tree that I could use consistently for all of the materials in this project, with minimal tweaks needed.

I used photo-real textures in the bump and roughness channels, but I used a solid color for the color channel. Often times, I would even have to remix the roughness channel to make my materials look less shiny.
