SPATIAL DESIGN

The cockpit projection piece is an immersive space that allows viewers to participate in an out of world experience. This project includes an overhead set piece constructed of wood and fabric. The fabric was projected from the rear, so the viewer could experience the projections close-up without casting shadows.

PLANNING

Planning for this project involved building a 3D model of the final set piece. This allowed me to get the dimensions I would need for the final product. Another benefit of beginning in 3D space was that I was able to unfold the faces of the model, which provided me with a reliable reference whenever it was time to design for the ship.

SYPHON TRIPPER

Syphon Tripper is a seasonal exhibition hosted by experiential artists from Savannah, GA. I had the opportunity to create work for the first and third Syphon Tripper Exhibitions.

For the first exhibition, I partnered with Colin Horvarth to create an interactive waterfall. Audience members could step in front of the projector, and a sensor on the floor would detect their hand movements, which would interrupt the flow of the particles. We used Touch Designer to create an immersive experience that connected the physical world with the digital.

The third exhibition, I teamed up with JC Petrofsky to create an angelic creature, that would haunt passerby. We built a grid from which we could suspend our canvases. We then hung 20 panels from which we could arrange any message of our choice. We chose phrases that would cause a minor feeling of unease such as “breathe voluntarily” so viewers can walk away having been affected by the piece, but in a slightly inconvenient way.

4 PANEL PROJECTION

This projection was an exercise in using black space in my animations. The set piece itself consists of four panels, two thin and two wide. I was able to artificially convert the two wide panels into four more thin panels using black space, which created the illusion of there being six thin panels in total.

The final effect is achieved by having animated elements cross in front of the black space, which creates the illusion that the visuals on screen are breaking the picture plane.
